5″ x 7″ Postcard – Sunrise in the Dalles

Description

This photograph was created on the first full day of a road-trip-style photography workshop. We spent a few early morning hours in The Dalles, Oregon. Our guide had planned a session photographing an abandoned vehicle. The old car was interesting, but I was also keeping an eye out for landscapes that reflected the agricultural character of the region.

A friend had expressed an interest in images that included working farmland, and this scene immediately caught my attention. The fenced meadows stretching across the hills gave the landscape a sense of place, while the blanket of balsamroot and lupine flowers added color to the foreground.

What drew me to this composition was the combination of elements working together—the flowers, the rolling hills, the patchwork of pastures, and the small burst of sunlight peeking over the ridge. From this vantage point, it felt possible to take in the scale of the landscape while still appreciating the details at my feet.

While the abandoned vehicle may have been the planned subject of the morning, this sunrise became one of my favorite images from the workshop.
