This photograph marks the beginning of my journey into astrophotography.
In the summer of 2020, I attended my first hands-on photography workshop in Island Park, Idaho. With so much uncertainty surrounding COVID at the time, there was a real possibility the workshop would be canceled. Fortunately, it moved forward, giving me the opportunity to try something completely new.
I arrived excited but unprepared. Astrophotography has a steep learning curve, and at the time I didn’t know what I didn’t know. Camera settings, focusing in the dark, planning for the night sky, and processing the final image were all unfamiliar territory. Thankfully, the workshop leader guided us through the process and helped me work through the challenges.
Standing beneath the Milky Way for the first time with a camera in hand was an unforgettable experience. The old corrals provided a perfect foreground, connecting the landscape below with the vast sky above. More importantly, the experience showed me what was possible.
This image may not be my most technically advanced astrophotograph, but it is one of my most meaningful. It represents the moment I discovered a new passion. The workshop taught me how to create and edit my first night-sky images, and from that point forward I was hooked.
