5″ x 7″ Postcard – Judgy Jay

This Steller’s Jay appeared while I was waiting for the rest of my photography group to arrive. We were running behind schedule, and while I was waiting, I found myself watching this bird as closely as it seemed to be watching me.

At the time, I didn’t know exactly what species it was. I don’t often see jay birds where I live, so I looked it up after returning home to make sure I could tell the story correctly. As it turns out, my unexpected visitor was a Steller’s Jay.

I suspect the bird was hoping for a snack. To be fair, I was thinking about food myself after waiting longer than expected. Whatever its motivation, it seemed intensely interested in everything I was doing with my camera and rarely stopped watching me for long.

Photographing the jay was enjoyable, but not without challenges. The light changed quickly, and the park was more developed than I would have preferred. Cars, people, and other distractions often found their way into the frame, making composition and cropping more difficult than they might appear.

In the end, what I remember most is the bird’s expression. Whether it was curious, impatient, or simply evaluating my photography skills, it seemed to have an opinion about everything I was doing.
