Description
This photograph was created during an autumn workshop near Squirrel, Idaho. The old shack had become a favorite subject over several visits, offering opportunities for photographs both during the day and beneath the night sky.
What made this evening special was knowing the shack’s time was limited. The property had changed hands, and the structure was scheduled to be removed. Before that could happen, heavy winter snows brought it down, making photographs like this a record of something that no longer exists.
One of the highlights of the trip came when the property owner granted us permission to remain after dark. As the Milky Way rose above the old building, the only sounds came from cattle somewhere beyond the reach of our flashlights. Hearing them without being able to see them was a little unsettling, but it made the experience unforgettable.
More than the photograph itself, I remember standing beneath the stars, knowing I was witnessing a place that would soon be gone.
