Description
This photograph was created during a three-day workshop near the Mono Lake region of California, where Dan and I had the opportunity to learn about and photograph feral horses. Participation was limited, making the experience even more special.
By September, the landscape was dry and dusty. As the horses moved across the range, they stirred up clouds of dust that hung in the air and followed them across the open country.
The moment shown here happened in an instant. Dust kicked up by the herd caused the horse to sneeze, creating an expression that looks surprisingly human. Without the context, it appears as though the horse is reacting with complete disgust to something it just heard.
While we learned a great deal about feral horses during the workshop, this image remains one of my favorites because it captures an unexpected moment of personality and humor.
